Insulin resistance — the silent onset of diabetes
Insulin resistance affects an estimated 20–30% of the adult population. Cells lose sensitivity to insulin, the pancreas produces progressively more, and the body begins storing fat — particularly around the abdomen. Left untreated, it leads to type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular conditions.
Symptoms that should raise concern
- Drowsiness after meals — especially after carbohydrate-heavy food
- Abdominal weight gain — despite dieting and exercise
- Uncontrollable cravings for sweets
- Acanthosis nigricans — dark skin patches on the neck, armpits, or groin
- Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
- Irregular periods, PCOS — in women, insulin resistance is a common underlying cause
Diagnostics
The key test is HOMA-IR (fasting glucose + fasting insulin). Where indicated, we perform a glucose-insulin tolerance curve (OGTT with insulin) — 3-point or 5-point. All tests are collected on-site at Femi Premium.
Treatment
Treatment rests on three pillars: a low glycaemic index diet (with support from our in-house dietitian), regular physical activity, and — where justified — metformin. The diabetologist and dietitian collaborate on a single, integrated plan.
